Legal Chairs for Professional Standards Committees (PSCs)

The Health Professional Councils Authority (HPCA) is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced people interested in appointment to a panel of Legal Chairs.

Legal Chairs are appointed to preside over Professional Standards Committees for medical practitioners, nurses and midwives in NSW and may be appointed as a member of other regulatory hearings, committees and panels that regulate health professionals in NSW.

Am I eligible to apply?

Applicants must:

  • be admitted as a legal practitioner with, or eligible for, an unrestricted practising certificate from the NSW Law Society [which is not subject to condition 2]
  • possess qualifications and/or experience rendering them suitable for appointment
  • have the capacity to undertake regulatory hearings
  • be resident in NSW.

 

You are not eligible to apply if:
  • you are a registered health practitioner in Australia or overseas
  • you are a current Council member or have been a Council member within the past 3 years.

How long is the term of appointment and when does it begin?
  • PSC Chairs are appointed for a term of up to four years. 
  • It is anticipated terms will commence by 30 September 2025. 
How do I apply?

Please email the following documents to hpca-ps-appointments@health.nsw.gov.au by 5pm Friday 25 July 2025:

  • expression of interest form, including the name and contact details of two referees
  • a covering letter or brief statement addressing each of the selection criteria (no more than three pages)
  • an up-to-date curriculum vitae (no more than five pages)

Your application cannot be considered if you do not include the above three documents.

 
Selection criteria 

Applications must address each of the following selection criteria:

  1. Demonstrated high level experience in leadership, management and decision-making.
  2. The capacity to actively participate as a panel member in the regulation of registered health practitioners to protect the public including demonstrating integrity, independence, impartiality, fairness, good judgement and, cultural and social awareness.
  3. High level of oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  4. Demonstrated experience or capacity to work collaboratively and productively in a team.
  5. Ability to deliver prompt, accurate, well-reasoned written decisions in plain English.
  6. Willingness to develop a knowledge and understanding of the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (NSW) and the Health Care Complaints Act.

 

Referee reports

Please include the name and contact details of two referees. Your referees should be able to discuss your skills, qualifications and fit with responsibilities of a lay member involved in regulatory hearings, committees and panels.
